MEMORANDUM

TO:  Inspectors, Contractors, Homeowners, other interested parties

FROM:  Ken Jackson, Building Inspections Administrator

SUBJECT: Pier and Curtain Walls under the 2006 NC Residential Code  (Effective Jan. 1, 2008)

Per Section R404.1.5.1 (#4), the maximum height of a 4” brick curtain wall is 6’ (72”).

The height of the 4” curtain wall will be determined by measuring from the top of the footing, if the wall is sitting directly on the continuous footing.  If the curtain wall is sitting on, or is backed up and properly bonded to solidly filled (with concrete or Type M or S mortar) concrete masonry units, the height will be determined by measuring from the top of the concrete masonry units to the top of the 4” curtain wall.  In either case, the maximum height of the 4” curtain wall is 6’ (72”).
