NC’s Online Orientation . . .

A key step for those considering foster parenting

  • Easy to Find. Simply go to
  • Fast! Takes just 15 minutes. No registration required. Just go to and begin.
  • Super Helpful. Explains foster care, describes the children in need of foster homes, and tells you how to take the next step to becoming a licensed foster parent in North Carolina.
  • Certificate of Completion. At the end, print your certificate of completion and share it with the foster care agency you choose to work with.

“Orientation for NC Foster Parents” was developed by the NC Division of Social Services in partnership with the Jordan Institute for Families at the UNCChapel Hill School of Social Work, the NC Foster and Adoptive Parent Association, and North Carolina’s foster care agencies.

Gaston County DHHS will be holding classes for prospective foster parents  throughout the year. The curriculum for these classes is from the Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting (MAPP) and gives prospective foster parents the thirty hours of orientation needed to become licensed. These classes are taught in a group setting at the Department of Health & Human Services, Social Services Building at 330 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way (previously North Marietta Street) in Gastonia (Auditorium). There is no charge for participants. Please call or email to find out about upcoming sessions and to enroll.

The Gaston County DHHS also provides another program capable of providing prospective foster parents the thirty hours of orientation needed to become licensed. This program is called Deciding Together and is similar to the (MAPP) curriculum; however, it is designed to be taught on a one on one basis in the home. The program costs participants approximately $100.00 for the book/materials. This program has proven beneficial for families with busy schedules who do not have the ability to attend (MAPP) classes at the Department.
