Gaston County is a bustling community of more than 200,000 people just west of Charlotte. Our 14 cities and towns are home to industry, agriculture, business, places of worship, and tremendous natural resources — a great place to raise a family.
But life in Gaston County is not all good. Gaston’s residents are unhealthy. They don’t eat enough healthy foods. They don’t get enough exercise. Two out of three adults are overweight or obese. They have heart disease, diabetes and disabilities in higher numbers than the North Carolina average. Too many of them smoke, resulting in lung disease rates far higher than the state rate. Too many Gaston teens are having babies.
That’s where we come in. The Gaston County Health Department’s mission is to lead Gaston County in
becoming a healthier community with healthy people living in a healthy environment.
We do this by treating disease in our community and preventing its spread, ensuring that all residents of Gaston County have access to affordable, high-quality medical care, working to promote healthier lifestyles in the county through direct outreach and education, making sure the places you eat, sleep and play are clean and safe, and by wisely managing county tax dollars and the other funds that keep our programs running.
On our site, you can read about the services we provide, the work we do in the community and how we're working to help you live a healthier life.
