Gaston Launches New Abuse and Neglect Subcommittee
On Thursday, September 27th, a newly formed Gaston County Abuse and Neglect Subcommittee will meet for the first time. This subcommittee will operate under the Gaston County Board of Health & Human Services and will support and guide the county in preventing and responding to abuse and neglect in the community. The Board unanimously voted to approve the Subcommittee in May.
The goals of the Abuse and Neglect Subcommittee are to improve service delivery, increase focus on prevention, identify and brainstorm solutions to abuse and neglect issues, and strengthen the communication network with community partners. Additionally, the subcommittee has the following responsibilities: analyze local abuse and neglect issues with subject matter experts, hear citizen concerns, explore fundraising opportunities for abuse and neglect programs, and increase public awareness and education.
Membership of the Subcommittee will include representatives from law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, mental health/substance abuse sector, medical professionals and/or a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, the faith community, Gaston County Schools, and consumers of services.
“This subcommittee is going to be an incredible asset to our agency and the citizens of Gaston County,” said Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services Director Chris Dobbins. “Our department continues to see increasing complexity in cases of abuse and neglect, with many risk factors and fewer available resources; the solutions of the past are no longer meeting these families’ needs. I commend our Board of Health & Human Services and the County Commissioners for putting this Subcommittee in place to help us identify new strategies for addressing abuse and neglect and to strengthen the critical relationship between our department and the community.”
The Abuse and Neglect Subcommittee will meet on a quarterly basis. Meeting minutes and upcoming meeting dates can be found at www.gastonhhs.org.
