[ARCHIVED] Suspect in Custody Following Death Investigation

Gastonia, NC (October 4th, 2023, 2:25PM): One man is in custody today following an overdose death investigation that lasted several months.  Joshua James Allen Hammonds, 34, is facing charges of death by distribution and distribution of heroin in connection with the incident.

The Gaston County Police Department was called to 113 W. L. Butler Circle in Bessemer City on March 3rd, 2022 in reference to a suspicious death.  Officers located the victim, Savannah Nicole Russell, deceased at the scene.  The Gaston County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit began an investigation.  

For several months, Gaston County Police Detectives gathered information and evidence surrounding the incident.  At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page.  District Attorney Page authorized the charges of death by distribution and distribution of heroin.  The warrants for Hammonds’s arrest were obtained on October 3rd, 2023 around 4:00 PM.  Members of the Gaston County Police FAST Team located Hammonds on October 3rd, 2023 around 7:00 PM.  He was taken into custody without incident.

Hammonds was booked into the Gaston County Jail and is currently under a $1-million-dollar bond.
