GASTONIA, N.C. – Gaston County is preparing to host a celebration of its 175th anniversary on Dec. 21, 2021, and is inviting the community to participate in a poetry contest as part of the festivities.
The contest is divided into three age groups: Kindergarten-5th grade, 6th-12th grade and adult (18-and-over), with anyone who lives, works or attends school in Gaston County eligible to enter. All poems must be submitted by email to Deputy Communications Director Dandria Bradley by midnight on Monday, Dec. 13.
Poems must be original works, between 3 and 26 lines in length and touch on either the history and/or the future of Gaston County. Download full rules here.
Winners will be contacted directly and then announced in person at the 175th Anniversary Celebration on Dec. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion in Gastonia. Each winner will be invited to read their poem and then have it framed and hung in Gaston County’s administration building, and will also receive a commemorative medal.
Winning poems will also be published on the special biblioboard webpage set up to collect historical information and community stories about the county’s history: https://gastoncounty.librariesshare.com/gastonanniversary/.
The Dec. 21 celebration will feature guest speakers, in addition to the poetry reading, and light refreshments following the ceremony.
